5 things I’ve learned in law school…so far

AAU law school

The day I found out that I got in to Addis Ababa University school of Law was one of the happiest days of my life. I was ecstatic. It was something that I’ve worked hard for and seeing it pay off was the greatest feeling. To say my stay in law school has been eventful would be a big understatement. A lot has happened and it’s only been a year and a half (almost). Everyday has been a learning experience, and not just academically. So, here are the five things law school has thought me, and in no way the only things (I’m just too lazy to write more).

  1. Fuck your enemies, keep your friends closer!

Life is too short and fleeting for you to be worrying about those people that would like to see you fall on your face. You shouldn’t be wasting a second thinking about them when you can be thinking about other important things (Zombies. Squirrels. Beer!!!)  Enjoy the crazy moments with your crazy friends because these are the people you have a bond with, a lasting friendship.

  1. Play hard, work harder!

Sometimes it’s hard to balance these two things. But it’s all about knowing your priorities and sticking to them. You have to give a 100% in everything you do (well…unless you are donating blood). But at the same time, enjoy yourself. Kick back and relax after a long day of studying, have a drink or two. Get high. Cause all work and no play,…The-Simpsons-05x09-The-Last-Temptation-Of-Homer

  1. Be loud!

Don’t keep quiet, be loud. Let your voice be heard. Stand up for your ideas and beliefs. Pursue them. There’s no right or wrong answer. Speak your mind, piss some people off.

  1. In yourself you Should trust

Truth is, most people don’t care if you succeed or fail. It’s a selfish world where everyone is looking out for their interests and their interests alone.  Other people won’t be losing sleep because of your problems. They might sympathize with you but that’s as far as it can go. God knows, they might also have their own problems to stay all night losing sleep over. Trust your instincts, your guts. Have confidence in your decisions, doesn’t matter if they end up paying off or not. Trust in what you can do, and most importantly, believe in yourself, if you don’t, nobody else will.

  1. Breath

Law school can be pretty hectic. With the constant assignments, never ending readings and studies, it is easy to be frustrated and stressed out. You gotta relax. Take a moment to gather your thoughts. Listen to your favorite album. Dance. Regroup and start again. Breath.
